Governance Training

SharePoint Fundamentals Training

Taught by:  Xcelligent

SharePoint 2007 Governance Curriculum

Governance Concepts
In this 1-Day course, students will learn the basics and principals of SharePoint Governance. What it is and how its principals can be applied to their business. In addition, students will learn ways to implement a governance plan that best fits their organization. Differences in the various ways governance can be applied are also discussed. Students continue conceptual knowledge with exercises to help them identify SharePoint owners and governing authority as well as building the governance roles and responsibilities that will best fit their organization. Since a governance plan is unique to each business, concepts, frameworks and best practices will be discussed to help the students build a plan that will work for their organization.

Practical Applications
Students will develop a governance framework document, built on a standard template, that is unique to their organization. They will also be encouraged to work in groups to discuss ideas that best fit their organizational model. The students can then use the classroom draft documents as a basis for working documents within the organization after the class is complete.

Technical Skills
Students will receive templates and worksheets in MS Word format for the hands-on exercises which will begin their governance draft documents.

Opportunities
This class will provide SharePoint governance opportunities in the following areas:

Challenge:   Students are challenged to think of SharePoint governance and how it works within an organization. Each student will be encouraged to find a solution to their department’s unique governance situation while keeping the bigger picture in mind. Their draft documents will be built using their own situation.

Application:  Students are guided to use their knowledge of a governance framework and apply it to their organization. This exercise will get the students to think of SharePoint governance from as business solution and guide them to avoid looking at from a strictly Information Technology viewpoint.

Organizational Approach:   Students will be encouraged to build from a department-by-department approach to an organizational approach and solution. This change in approach will help them build a governance plan that will work throughout the organization instead of building rules and guidelines that some departments will avoid.

Participants of this course will learn

  • SharePoint Governance Definition & Principals
  • The three aspects of Governance
  • The importance of business ownership, business positioning and guidelines for identifying the proper owners
  • The enterprise ramifications of using SharePoint
  • How to establish an operational framework
  • Getting to a “Managed State”
  • Implementation success criteria
This outline and related curriculum are an excellent primer to our SharePoint Deep Dive course, which covers SharePoint topics from Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS). This course was developed by Xcelligent, LLC.
