CAREER CORNER

EXPAND YOUR NETWORK.  STAY CONNECTED.

This past May, SetFocus celebrated its 8th year of business. From our first class in October 1997 to today, we have trained over 630 software developers through The Master’s Program.

What does this mean for you?

A rich network of successful software developers across the nation who have all attended The Master’s Program.

As we have grown, we have realized more and more the importance of alumni networking and the success it has brought our graduates. To date, without any formal fostering on our part at least 10% of graduates have attained positions through networking with other Master’s Program graduates.

SetFocus plans to formalize Alumni Networking for your benefit.  Here are just a few of the goals we will be working towards over the next 12 months:

  • On line system to allow you to easily update your contact information and resume.
  • Ability to search and contact available alumni for open needs you may have through a matching skills system.

These are just 2 ideas that we feel will increase the ability to network with fellow alumnus.  If you have ideas that you feel could further facilitate formalized alumni networking please contact Theresa Billy, Career Development Specialist, today.

Net.Work:  A True Story

I have begun a full-time position this week at GridPoint (.com), a startup company that makes a line of electricity conservation units. The office is located in downtown Washington, D.C. Energy is a big issue lately, and the office is all abuzz due to separate planned visits next week from Senator Bill Bradley and some advisors from the White House.

Although I was skeptical, I actually got this position as a result of my performance at SetFocus. My current boss has worked closely with two SetFocus graduates in the past, from a couple of years ago, at Proxicom. He considers SetFocus to be the best .NET training program in the country.

I am/will be using C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server 2000, XML Web Services, BizTalk, and most of all, Microsoft SharePoint Portal Services, employed to allow users to customize their own web portal to maintain the settings and view the performance of their unit (similar to My Yahoo!). Don't be impressed, because SharePoint controls are available from the Toolbox just like other controls.

Yesterday, I was told to rewrite a Console app into a Windows service, extract the literals into a .config file, and debug the service while it was running. Scary stuff, since there is so much I do not know, but just like learning to ski or snowboard, it is best to do something each day that scares me if I want to improve my skills.

PROGRAMMER OR DEVELOPER?

While doing research for this quarter’s newsletter, I came across a number of very interesting BLOG posts on the topic of whether people consider themselves to be programmers or developers. Though for ages, individuals have used the terms synonymously - there appears to be some very distinct semantic differences….which are you?

PROGRAMMERS: People who specialize in writing code.
A programmer is someone who does nothing but code new features and [if you're lucky] fix bugs.

  • They don't write specs.
  • They don't write automated test cases.
  • They don't help keep the automated build system up to date.
  • They don't help customers work out tough problems.
  • They don't help write documentation.
  • They don't help with testing.
  • They don't even read code.
  • All they do is write new code.

DEVELOPERS: People who will contribute in multiple ways to make the product successful.  The bulk of their time should be spent writing code and fixing bugs.

But every developer also needs to be involved in other areas such as the following:

  • Spec documents
  • Configuration management
  • Code reviews
  • Testing
  • Automated tests
  • Documentation
  • Solving tough customer problems

SetFocus launches a revolutionary on-line training experience for .NET Developers

SetFocus has officially launched The GRID, a revolutionary on-line training solution for .NET Developers.  A Microsoft Gold Certified Partner for Learning Solutions (CPLS), SetFocus has spent the past 2 years designing and developing an on-line training solution for those developers who cannot travel to the cutting-edge training company’s New York City Metropolitan facilities to attend high-level .NET Developer instructor-led courses in person.

The GRID is a Global Remote Instructional Delivery experience, which sets a new standard for on-line learning.  “We set as a standard that anything we do in the area of distance learning had to be equal to or greater than the experience of being in one of our classrooms”, stated Mike Landau, President and CEO of SetFocus.  To accomplish this goal SetFocus partnered with Polycom, the industry’s leader in video conferencing, to deliver its instructor-led, face to face instruction to software developers across the country, live.  What makes The GRID unique and far superior to traditional synchronous on-line learning environments is its combination of seamless audio / video conferencing combined with real-time access to fully loaded .NET developer environments via Windows Virtual Machines.

Through The GRID, instructors and in-class students, interact, communicate, and collaborate with remote students through audio quality 400% greater than telephone and video quality that of television.  In addition, remote students have full access to Microsoft Visual Studio.NET environments including but not limited to MSDN and SQL Server, through Windows Virtual Machines.  Though geographically separated, The GRID offers a solution that allows the instructor, in class peers, and students in their homes to collaborate as if they were sitting side by side in the classroom.

ALUMNI SPEAK!

Time flies; it's already been more than two years since I was at SetFocus. I've been back in Tampa since July and
also with a new employer. I've been at BayCare Health System now for a month. I am their first .Net developer. Hopefully more will join soon.

Once I was back in Tampa from Tallahassee, I decided not to continue consulting and started to look for a permanent position. What happened next completely vindicated again the decision to go to SF.

By the middle of the second week of looking, I had two offers in writing and two others on the phone.  I took Baycare because, and you may hate me for this, on a bad day it takes me 8 minutes to get to work.  Plus they pay well and the people are nice.

Why Network?(excerpt from Monster.com)

In the world of work, networking is, indeed, a very big deal -- even the Wall Street Journal reported two years ago that 94% of successful job seekers claimed that networking had made all the difference for them.

Networking comes in many forms -- everything from meeting an old friend for a cup of coffee to having your best friend's father put in a good word for you at his company, to meeting with an older alum from your school to learn more about a career opportunity.

For more information on how to network click here.

Dictionary:  Blog

The term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger in December 1997. The shorter version, "blog," was coined by Peter Merholz, who, in April or May of 1999, broke the word weblog into the phrase "we blog" in the sidebar of his weblog. This was interpreted as a short form of the noun and also as a verb, to blog, meaning "to edit one's weblog or a post to one's weblog."

Usage spread during 1999, with the word being further popularized by the near-simultaneous arrival of the first hosted weblog tools: Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan's company Pyra Labs launched Blogger (which was purchased by Google in 2004) and Paul Kedrosky's GrokSoup. As of March 2003, the Oxford English Dictionary included the terms weblog, weblogging and weblogger in their dictionary.

If you are a Blogger we would love to post your link in our next newsletter in a new section called:  SetFocus Bloggers.
